These are the providers’ published maximums as of September 2026, for plans taken out from 15 July 2026. They’re not a quote: your own agreement sets what you’d pay.

The planner assumes each plan’s first payment is taken the day you buy, so that day counts as the first date. Klarna can take its first payment when the order ships instead, which moves its dates later. Klarna payments are 30 days apart and Clearpay’s 14 days apart. PayPal’s fall on the same date each month, and the planner uses the last day of a shorter month. The next month runs from the day after your first purchase to the same date a month later.

Why plans are easy to lose track of

Each plan runs on its own clock. Klarna’s Pay in 3 payments are 30 days apart, Clearpay’s four payments are two weeks apart, and PayPal’s fall on the same date each month. Buy three things on the same day and the payments soon stop lining up.

The planner starts with that example: £90 trainers on Klarna, a £120 jacket on Clearpay and £60 headphones on PayPal, all bought on Saturday 3 October 2026. That’s £80 on the day, then £110 on four different dates over the next month, from three apps, and £270 in all.

What a missed payment costs

The late fees are each provider’s published maximums for plans taken out from 15 July 2026. Klarna charges nothing for the first 14 days, then up to £6, and never more than £12 on one plan. Clearpay charges £6, then another £6 a week later, with no fees on orders under £24 and a cap of 25% of the order or £24. PayPal Pay in 3 has no late fees.

Fees aren’t the only cost. A missed payment can go on your credit file, and mortgage lenders such as Halifax ask about these plans. The guide goes through what each provider does day by day, what shows on your credit report and where to get free help if you can’t pay.
