UK figures use the ONS Consumer Prices Index (CPI), yearly averages from 1988. US figures use the BLS Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), yearly averages from 1913. “Now” is August 2026, the latest month published. These are averages across a whole basket of goods and services, so your own costs may have risen faster or slower.

The savings line compounds the rate you type once a year, before tax, as if it never changed. Real savings rates move with interest rates.

Where the figures come from

UK prices use the Office for National Statistics’ consumer prices index (CPI), which tracks a basket of about 760 goods and services, from bread and bus fares to rent and haircuts. US prices use the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ CPI-U. Both are yearly averages, compared with the latest month published.

By those measures, what cost £100 on average in 2000 cost £197.52 in August 2026, and $100 of 2000 prices is $194.53. Cash that earned nothing has lost the same ground: £100 kept since 2000 buys what £50.63 bought then.

Checking your savings

Put in the interest rate your savings earned and the calculator shows whether they kept up with prices. It uses one rate for the whole period, before tax, so treat it as a rough check. The guide shows what the average easy access account has paid since 2011, how far it fell behind prices in 2022 and what can help.

For UK years before 1988 you’d need the older retail prices index (RPI), which is worked out differently and usually runs higher.
