Student loan repayment calculator
Work out your monthly student loan repayment for 2026 to 2027 on Plan 1, 2, 4, 5 or a Postgraduate Loan, and whether it’s likely to be repaid before write-off.
- Monthly repayment now
- £42
- £504 a year on £35,000, 9% of pay over £29,385
- Interest rate now
- 4.82%
- RPI of 4.1% plus 0.72% for your income
- If nothing changes
- Written off in April 2052
- with £128,129 still owed then
- Total you’d repay
- £12,852
- over 25 years 6 months from now
If your pay stays the same and the rules don’t change, you’d repay £12,852 before the rest, £128,129, is written off in April 2052.
The Plan 2 threshold is frozen at £29,385 from April 2027 for three years in England, which the projection matches. It isn’t yet confirmed for Welsh borrowers: the Welsh Government said in April 2026 the freeze wouldn’t apply to them, but that was before the Senedd election, and it’s now for the new Welsh Government to decide.

Thresholds are for the 2026 to 2027 tax year: Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 (Scotland) £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000, Postgraduate Loan £21,000. You repay 9% of pay over the threshold, or 6% on a Postgraduate Loan, worked out on each month’s pay and rounded down to the pound, as payroll does. Interest from 1 September 2026 is RPI of 4.1% for Plans 1, 4 and 5; Plan 2 charges RPI plus up to 3% for incomes between £29,385 and £52,885. Plan 2 and Postgraduate Loans are capped at 6% until 31 August 2027, then go back to RPI plus up to 3%, which is 7.1% at today’s RPI for Postgraduate Loans and for Plan 2 on £52,885 or more. Loans are written off 25 years (Plan 1), 30 years (Plans 2 and 4, Postgraduate Loans) or 40 years (Plan 5) after the April you were first due to repay. Plan 1 loans first paid before 1 September 2006 are written off when you’re 65 instead, and Plan 4 loans first paid before 1 August 2007 when you’re 65 or after 30 years, whichever comes first. The projection starts in October 2026 and keeps your salary, the thresholds and RPI at today’s levels, apart from any pay rise you add each April, and it applies the end of the 6% cap from September 2027. In practice all of these change, so treat it as an illustration, not a forecast. It shows one plan at a time and leaves out extra repayments, time off work, self-employment and time abroad.
What goes in
Choose your plan, then enter your salary before tax, your balance and the year of the April you were first due to repay. Your online Student Loans Company account shows the plan and balance. Add a yearly pay rise if you want to see what that changes.
What the result means
The monthly figure is what payroll takes now. On Plan 2 with a £35,000 salary that’s £42 a month, or £504 a year: 9% of pay over £29,385, rounded down to the pound each month. What you repay depends on your pay, not on what you owe.
The projection shows whether the loan would be cleared before it’s written off. With that salary, a £45,000 balance and repayments first due in April 2022, interest at 4.82% outpaces repayments, so it would be written off in April 2052. It keeps your pay, the thresholds and RPI as they are now, which won’t happen, so read it as an illustration.
The 2026 to 2027 rules
The thresholds are £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £21,000 for Postgraduate Loans, which repay 6% rather than 9%. From 1 September 2026, interest is RPI of 4.1% on Plans 1, 4 and 5. Plan 2 charges RPI plus up to 3% depending on income. Plan 2 and Postgraduate Loans are capped at 6% until 31 August 2027. After that they go back to RPI plus up to 3%, which at today’s RPI is 7.1% for Postgraduate Loans and for Plan 2 incomes of £52,885 or more, and the projection uses those rates from September 2027.
Loans are written off 25 years after the April you were first due to repay on Plan 1, 30 years on Plans 2 and 4 and Postgraduate Loans, and 40 years on Plan 5. Older loans work differently. Plan 1 loans first paid before 1 September 2006 are written off when you’re 65. The calculator only projects the 25-year rule, so it starts Plan 1 at 2007 and won’t fit an older loan. Plan 4 loans first paid before 1 August 2007 are written off when you’re 65 or after 30 years, whichever comes first.
The Plan 1 threshold rises to £28,005 in April 2027. The Plan 2 threshold is frozen at £29,385 for three years from then in England, but it isn’t yet confirmed for Welsh borrowers. The Welsh Government said on 7 April 2026 that the freeze wouldn’t apply to them. That was before the Senedd election, and Senedd Research said on 28 May 2026 that it’s a decision for the new Welsh Government.
