Weekly pay is your average over the 12 weeks before you were given notice. Years count back from the redundancy date, and only full years count. From 6 April 2026 weekly pay is capped at £751 in England, Scotland or Wales (up to £22,530) and £783 in Northern Ireland (up to £23,490). Your contract may give you more than this legal minimum.

Who gets it

You’re normally entitled to statutory redundancy pay if you’re an employee and you’ve worked for the same employer for 2 years or more. You don’t get it if your employer offers to keep you on, or offers suitable other work that you turn down without a good reason.

How it’s worked out

Counting back from the date you’re made redundant, you get:

  • half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22
  • one week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41
  • one and a half weeks’ pay for each full year you were 41 or older

Only full years count, and only the last 20. Weekly pay is your average over the 12 weeks before you got your redundancy notice, before tax. For redundancies on or after 6 April 2026 it’s capped at £751 a week, so the most anyone gets is £22,530. Northern Ireland’s cap is £783 a week, up to £23,490.

Someone aged 45 with 12 years’ service on £600 a week gets 4 years at one and a half weeks and 8 years at one week. That’s 14 weeks, or £8,400.

Tax and deadlines

The first £30,000 of statutory redundancy pay isn’t taxed. You have 6 months from the date your job ends to claim it. Your employer should also give you your notice period, or pay you instead, and pay you for any statutory holiday you haven’t taken. Your contract may give you more than the statutory amount.
